Because have a special interest in the veterinary care of these small often so-called children pets here are a few tips for their care in Winter. Hutches can be cold lonely places so please ensure in this cold weather any hutches are wrapped and insulated. These animal can cope with low temperatures as long as they have plenty of soft insulating bedding - newpaper and good quality hay or straw is fine. In addition check their water bottles do not freeze up - there are snug fitting insulators available at all good pet shops. Also remember that sudden changes in diet are not good for our hind gut fermenting friends - any new diets, even a change in bag of their food - should be performed gradually. Ideally you should overlap the diets and mix them together.
Rabbits and Guinea Pigs are VERY social animals with their own species. If they have always been kept with other species they can get on well but in general they should be living like-with-like. Same sex mixing can be achieved but please make sure they can find their own 'private' space and consider neutering if they squabble alot. They do not need massive areas but psychological space such as a box that means they do not have to stare all day at their flat mate is just as important.

The warm winter has seen a bizarre flea situation which means that rather than stopping in November with the usual freezing temperatures we are still seeing alot of fleas living on animals (occasional travellers) AND some obvious house infestations - where the environment becomes the main source of reinfection. If you have a dog or cat who keeps nibbling - especially sudden intense itches over the tail get that Frontline Combo out and even consider a carpet spray. We recommend RIP spray because of its combination action and attempt at a fragrance.

The other two strays were found in Abergavenny and brought in by concerned members of the public. One had been tied by its owner, when they went shopping, they forgot about the poor soul until 6 hours later when we phoned them!!!!
The last was a simple lost soul who strays often and was reunited when the owner came forward to re-claim her - Again.
We are getting an increasing number of calls as Monmouthshire Council has had to cut back on provision of out of hours cover and funding for a full time dog warden.
One question we are asked is who pays for looking after strays and abandoned animals - the answer is simple - no-one! Abbey vets spent over £2,000 on abandoned animals in 2009/10.
However, if we rescue an abandoned animal or stray and we can find the owner we ask them when found to contribute to the veterinary care and our stray fund. Any funds from strays reunited go directly to our charity fund for abandoned animals.

November 2010
At the start of November Abbey Vets were reported in the Abergavenny Chronicle for the wonderful story of Duchess the Beagle belonging to Mrs Harris, Llanvapley. Duchess made a miraculous recovery when she survived a nine day ordeal hanging by her leg from a barbed wire fence. After some quite fantastic nursing by all the nurses at Abergavenny she went home after five days in the clinic. We wish her well on her amazing recovery.
Lastly the equine clinic is still running tis dental + wormer promotion - contact them on 01873 840069 to claim your free wormer with every dental.
Small animal has got our gift pack for all new puppies and kittens with a month's free insurance, a free gift for every newly registered animal including either Hills food worth at least £5, a free 6-month check and Health book and vaccinations for their first year.
August 2010
Summer holidays are closing in and we have continued with some of the internal improvments at Abergavenny including the new team noticeboard. We are trying to get the quality products promotions going - where staff members pick their own pets favourite toys and pet accessories - so we have the Kong Toys on special offer.
Fleas have obviously had a great summer so if anyone has an itchy pet bring them in for a free nurse flea check. Good old Frontline Combo still seems the most effective product with environmental control in severe cases with a household spray. Remeber to treat ALL pets in the household even if only one is showing signs of itching
We have seen loads of poorly tummies with the wet weather - perhaps dogs drinking from rain puddles or eating leftovers in the parks and still a couple of bones stuck in the intestines. Please watch out because cooked bones just shatter and cause trauma to the bowels. We prefer rawhide chews given under supervision...
February 2010

Despite extensive burns, she made a fantastic recovery and has now been rehomed. Thank you to all our clients who contacted us to offer help during her recovery. See the full article below.

The equine dental team will continue their work to increase awareness of equine dentistry by qualified veterinary surgeons with extensive experience in oral health - often requiring sedation to ensure a full oral examination is part of your horse's health plan.

4th Sept 2008: Kennel Cough outbreak in Abergavenny
Abbey Vets have noted a large number of dogs presenting with kennel cough. The condition produces a severe cough often accompanied with gagging and retching. As a name 'kennel cough' is a bit of a misnomer. Although commonly seen in dogs that have been in a dog kennels, this infectious disease can be spread by social contact wherever groups of dogs congregate e.g dog walking and play and training or agility clubs.
Fortunately in most cases treatment is rapidly effective and successful. There is a vaccination against the most serious cause of kennel cough Bordetella bronchiseptica so if you are concerned your pet is at risk phone for an appointment.
